Review: Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil - Glossy Emerald

Hi Everyone!

Oh my god, I've had a very stressful day. I just finished taking my GRE, but I don't feel too confident about it. I really really REALLY hope I did well, but I get the feeling I just got some average/half-way score, AKA not conpetitive, AKA not good enough....😟😞

Anyways, onto my review. Today, I will be discussing the Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil in the color Glossy Emerald.

As I mentioned last week, when I wrote my review over the Revlon eyeliner in Teal, I love to try out new eyeliner colors. It's always fun for me and I just like a variety when it comes to my eye make-up. Especially since I don't really do much for the rest of my face, as I've said before, I really just like minimal make-up, mainly just the eye area.
So I thought it would be fun to try out a dark green color. I don't really gravitate towards bright or neon colors, so this Emerald was the perfect color for me! I found it at the same time I bought the Revlon one, while walking around a CVS. I was actually really undecided between this Glossy Emerald and the Silken Turquoise (more of a blue-green), but since I bought the Teal of the Revlon one, I decided this green one was the way to go.

Maybelline advertises this eyeliner as:
"This waterproof and smudge-resistant gel eyeliner glides on smooth for impactful definition. All-day wear. Ophthalmologist tested. Dermatologist tested. Allergy tested. Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers."

I agree 100% that this eyeliner glides on smoothly! It's like the saying "spreading butter on bread", it goes on so smoothly and has a really creamy feel as it's going on. The color is really pigmented which I really like. It's actually quite a dark/rich emerald color, so much so that from far away you can't really tell that I have green eyeliner on. You need to be much color in-person to be able to notice that it's not a black eyeliner. I think if you are more fair or light skinned then it might show up more green on your skin tone.
It has more of a satin-y/metallic-y look/finish to it, not really glitter-y. I guess in some aspects, you could consider it shimmery, but this isn't what I would usually consider shimmery.

It's suppose to be able to last for 16 hours, I will be putting this to the test to see if this is true.

Unlike the Revlon one, this is an actual PENCIL eyeliner, AKA, you have to use a sharpener to make the liner more point-y or to just get more product out overall. It was actually really confusing for me at first because that the bottom of the eyeliner, you can actually twist the bottom section, almost making it seem like you can make the eyeliner twist up and out, but you actually can NOT! Do not be confused, you WILL need a make-up sharpener for this eyeliner.
~~~You don't necessarily HAVE to buy a make-up pencil sharpener, however, I find that using a sharpener that is intended for make-up and not regular pencils actually makes a big difference on how the eyeliner is sharpened. I don't know if there is a difference in the razor blade, but whenever I use a regular run-in-the-mill hand-held pencil sharpener, the eyeliner just keeps on breaking off that all I am left with is a nub.
*Also, this eyeliner does NOT come with any extra accessories like the Revlon eyeliner did.*
Here is a picture of how the eyeliner pencil looks. As you can see, once you use up the eyeliner, you HAVE to sharpen it. (This picture was taken before I figured out that I had to use a sharpener).
You can kind of see at the end of the eyeliner that there is a satin-y finish to the color. Also, on the exterior of the eyeliner, they gave it a shimmery/satin-y look to it, giving you the idea that it is suppose to look like this. However, like I said before, I find that this looks more metallic-y/satin-y than shimmery/glitter-y.
How to Apply:
Glide the gel liner along the lash time from the inner to outer corner of the eye. Eyeliner is easily removed.
How I Apply:
I like to use this either as an eyeliner on it's own or on top of my usual black eyeliner, kind of like a double eyeliner look.
If I use this eyeliner on it's own, then I just do a wing-ed eyeliner look, I kind of like to go on the thicker side when it comes to my eyeliner, especially since I have double-eyelids, so it will show out more.
If I am using this eyeliner on top of my usual black eyeliner, then I just make a line (however thick I want) on top of my black eyeliner. I also try to follow the shape of the eyeliner I had on.
If you are quick enough, you might be able to smudge this eyeliner upwards to try and use it as an eye shadow.
Here is how I looked when I just applied the eyeliner. It is around 1pm.
 As you can see from the close-ups, the Emerald is more of a metallic/satin look. There is no glitter particles or really any shimmer. It is really pigmented.
Here if how I look after 3 hours of wear. I actually went outside in over 100 degrees F, so I was really sweaty. Please excuse my hair! The curls had died down due to the heat!
As you can see from the pictures above, there was a little smudging going on on my left eyelid. I have some oil build-up from my day outside. There isn't any smudging on my right eye at all. The edges of my eyeliner wings look good, still intact.
Here is how I looked after 9 hours of wearing the eyeliner. I had worked-out in the eyeliner. Again, please excuse my hair!
As you can see, after 9 hours of wearing this eyeliner, after sweating outside, and after working out in this eyeliner, there is significant smudging of the eyeliner on my eyelids. Even more smudging on my left eye compared to my right eye. The edges of my wings still look good, no transfer of eyeliner onto my lower lash line.
Overall, I do like this eyeliner! I like that it's super pigmented and that it glides on really easily onto my eyelids. There isn't any pulling or tugging, which is great.
I didn't have any type of reaction to this eyeliner, no discomfort at all.
One major con for me: NOT twist-able. You have to use a make-up sharpener to get more color out. That really annoys me because I just think it's an added mess and you loss quite some product that way.
This is definitely NOT a 16 hour longwear eyeliner. By the 3 hour mark, the eyeliner was already smudging onto my eyelids. It could just be I have extremely oily eyelids (but I don't think I really do...) but I really think this is just not meant to be a longwear eyeliner on it's own. Maybe if you have some eye shadow underneath it can help hide the smudging. But there is always the possibility that the smudging will go onto the eye shadow and be prominent as well.
If I'm comparing this eyeliner to the Revlon one, I think I like the Revlon one MORE because of the added accessories it gives and that it is able to twist up the eyeliner.
I do appreciate that there is more of a color selection for the Maybelline one than the Revlon one. However, I still wish there were even MORE colors to choose from. Hopefully that isn't wishful thinking and in the future maybe Maybelline will come out with even more colors.
When I was removing this eyeliner, it came off really easily with my oil cleanser. I got it all off in one go. If you are putting on the eyeliner and you mess up, you need to work fast and try to use a wet q-tip or put some lotion on a q-tip to try and remove the mistake.
Rate (out of 5 stars): ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is still a good eyeliner, despite the smudging onto the eyelids. I would still recommend this to friends and family, anyone wanting to try something new and different and fun! Experimenting with eyeliner is always something I enjoy doing and this is a great eyeliner to do just that!
I took one star off due to the smudging and the fact that you need to use a sharpener.
